Born in Dewsbury on 2 June 1980, Leigh Bromby began his professional
career with Sheffield Wednesday. He made his league debut in December
1999 while on a three-month loan at Mansfield. Bromby made his Wednesday
debut the following Christmas and ended that season with 20 appearances.
After playing 112 times for Wednesday, he travelled across the Steel City
to join Sheffield United on a free transfer in May 2004. He was an ever-present for the Blades in the season that followed and
signed a new three-year contract on 15 August 2006 after the Blades' promotion
to the Premier League at the end of the previous season. Bromby lost his place in the side and moved to Watford in January 2008
for a fee of £600,000 rising to £850,000 based on appearances. After only a year at Bramall Lane, Bromby returned to Sheffield United
on a six-month loan with a view to a permanent deal. He signed a new two-year
deal with United in 2009, but a few weeks later moved to Leeds United
in the summer transfer window, signing a four-year contract after agreeing
a £250,000 move. 'We're delighted to get things agreed with Leigh. He has good experience
in the Championship and he will be a valuable member of our squad,' said
manager Simon Grayson. 'There was interest from a few clubs, but we're
pleased to get things agreed and Leigh will add competition for places
within the squad.' Bromby himself said, 'I'm delighted to be here. It's happened pretty
quickly, but there was no decision to make really once I knew Leeds were
interested. I was brought up a Leeds fan - we had season tickets for a
lot of years - and my family are all big Leeds fans as well. They are
delighted and this is something I want to be a part of. 'I've played against Leeds a few times. I hope I can bring some experience
and competition for places because that's what you need. I spoke to Simon
Grayson before I signed, and I know him previously from when I was at
Sheffield Wednesday. He's got the club flying this season. 'I've been involved in promotion at Sheffield United, and they were always
near the top, and that's the ambition here. 'I'd had a fantastic four years at Sheffield United before I moved to
Watford. Then I went back on loan last season. I only signed permanently
again for Sheffield United in August and I didn't see myself moving on,
but a lack of games there coupled with the opportunity here seemed the
right thing to do.' Bromby played in 39 of United's games in League One as they
secured promotion back to the Championship but was limited to 15 appearances
the following season. After getting a run of games under his former Blades manager Neil Warnock,
Bromby picked up a serious injury against Cardiff City on 21 April 2012,
when he snapped his knee cap. Leeds confirmed the injury was very severe
and that Bromby would require surgery on the injury, which could rule
him out of action for a year. Warnock commented, 'He was in agony and had to have oxygen straight away.
He passed out. He'll have an operation and he will be out for a long,
long time - I'd be surprised if he is back before Christmas. It could
be a year. I'm gutted and disappointed for him because he has just come
back in the team and done well.' With no sign of a return to fitness, Bromby was released from his playing
contract at the end of the 2012/13 season and took a role coaching at
Leeds' academy. He later became coach of the Under-18 side, but was made
redundant by new Leeds owner Massimo Cellino in July 2014. A month later, Bromby joined Huddersfield Town as professional development
coach. He was appointed as the club's new head of football operations
in 2020 season and later became director of football. He left the club
in June 2023. |
