Arkle was a promising young forward from the Newcastle district who came
through the junior ranks at Leeds City, having appeared for England Schoolboys
(according to the Yorkshire Post).
With City short of forward strength, he was given his opportunity when
Rotherham County came to Elland Road for a Midland Section fixture on
6 October 1917. Leeds won the game 6-0 with goals from Arthur Price (2),
Jack Peart (2), Ernie Goodwin and Bob Hewison. The Yorkshire Post
reported that Arkle 'played a promising game at outside-right' and he
laid on some decent centres, one of which was nearly converted by Clem
Stephenson in the second half.
Despite his contribution, Arkle never appeared again for the City first
eleven and drifted into obscurity.
