Leeds United in the 1970s — July 2025

Dave Tomlinson is the webmaster for the mightyleeds.co.uk website, and Leeds United in the 1970s is his tenth book about the club.

A Decade of Glory, Grit and Gritted Teeth

The 1970s were arguably the most dramatic, divisive and defining years in Leeds United’s history — a decade where brilliance and bitterness walked hand in hand.

In Leeds United in the 1970s, Dave Tomlinson takes an unflinching look at this turbulent golden era. Leeds were not just a football team during this period — they were a force of nature. Loved by their own, loathed by many, they played with a ruthless edge that shattered the cosy status quo of English football.

The book picks up from the heady aftermath of the club’s first league title in 1969, as Don Revie’s side set about chasing greatness on all fronts. What followed was a rollercoaster of near misses, legendary victories, bitter defeats and off-field drama that still stirs strong emotions today.

From the heartache of missing out on the treble in 1970, to that iconic 1972 FA Cup win — Leeds’ only triumph in the competition — and the shock loss to Sunderland a year later, every moment is revisited with fresh insight. The 1974 title-winning campaign, arguably the team’s most complete season, is covered in detail, as is the infamous 1975 European Cup final against Bayern Munich — a match that left scars on a generation of Leeds fans.

But the story of Leeds in the '70s isn’t just about trophies and tactics. It’s about the personalities, the controversies, and the constant battle for respect in a game that often saw them as outsiders. The ‘Dirty Leeds’ label stuck, however unfairly, and the team’s combative style brought them into conflict with the establishment — and with figures like Alan Hardaker, Bob Stokoe, and Brian Clough.

As Revie departed for England, the club entered a decade of instability, with a revolving door of managers — including the infamous 44 days of Clough and a fleeting appearance by Jock Stein — struggling to match his legacy.

Packed with vivid stories, telling quotes, and behind-the-scenes perspectives, Leeds United in the 1970s is not just a football book — it’s the story of a team that redefined what it meant to win, and what it cost to chase greatness.
