Bamford pushing for Euro call-up - May 2021

Patrick Bamford has given England manager Gareth Southgate plenty to think about in the Premier League this season, ahead of the European Championships this summer.

A 15th goal of the campaign in a 3-1 win over Tottenham will certainly have done the striker's chances no harm at all, as he looks to get himself in that Three Lions squad for the major tournament.

Bamford Ends Scoring Drought

Despite Leeds picking up some impressive results in April, including a win over Manchester City and draws with Liverpool and Manchester United, Bamford had been struggling for chances in front of goal. However, he caused the Spurs defence all sorts of problems at Elland Road, and finally got on the scoresheet to help Leeds to a well-deserved three points.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa has regularly spoken about Bamford and his contribution to the team outside of simply scoring goals. The former Chelsea academy player, who was key to Leeds winning the Championship title last season, starts the defensive press from the front and opens up space for others with his runs in attack. There have been plenty calling for Bamford to be given a chance with England, and there are a few things playing into the 27-year-old's favour.

Bamford Euro Chances Boosted

The news that countries will be able to choose a 26-player squad instead of the usual 23 at this summer's tournament gives a big boost for Bamford's chances of making the cut. England do have depth in attack, with the likes of Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford guaranteed to be in the squad, barring injury, but there are places up for grabs in that attacking group.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins was selected over Bamford in the previous England squad, and once again it looks set to be a battle between the two for a place in the squad. Watkins has hardly been pulling up trees with his performances of late, and that could further boost Bamford's chances.

Southgate, who is based in Yorkshire, has been to Elland Road many times this season to get a closer look at the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Luke Ayling, Jack Harrison and Bamford. It does seem like Bamford can offer something different for England, who are available at 99/20 to win the European Championships this summer at Marathonbet, as well as favourites at numerous other sites available on the Oddschecker football betting comparison pages. The forward offers good aerial ability both in attack and defence, while also providing a left-footed option in attack.

Whether Patrick Bamford makes the England squad for the major tournament or not, it has still been a wonderful season for the Leeds frontman. He has gone on to silence the critics who suggested he could not compete in the Premier League, and it seems the former journeyman has now found a settled home at Elland Road.

An England call-up would be the icing on the cake for a player who has put blood, sweat and tears into the Leeds shirt this season.
